September 28 – Mephisto* Istran Sobo’s film takes place in Germany in the 1920’s and 30’s and chronicles the rise of the Nazi Party. It focuses on the career of an actor in Berlin whose ambition pre-empts any moral dimension much like the character of Mephistopheles he plays in Dr. Faustus.
October 26 – A Tale of Autumn* - Taken from Eric Rohmer’s “Tales of the Four Seasons” series, this film features a widow who owns and runs a vineyard dealing with the results of a personal ad placed in the local paper by her friend.
November 16 – The Wrong Box This film is a classic English comedy which features a cast that includes the young Peter Sellers and the heavy weights of the British acting community. The story is based on a tontine established in 1818 and the attempts of the survivors to collect the fortune that has accrued over time.
December 7 – Mulholland Drive Many film goers consider this David Lynch film a masterpiece of film noir. Its dream like structure is reminiscent of Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut in which dream and reality become indistinguishable leaving the viewer to construct a personal meaning that is subjective at best.
January 25 – Babette’s Feast* This film is a heartwarming tale in which a cook working in a small Danish town comes into a huge amount of money and decides that she will prepare a sumptuous French banquet for the entire town. We watch the film, salivating, as we watch both its preparation and consumption.
February 17 – Red* This film is taken from Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Blue-White-Red trilogy which uses the themes of the colours in the French Flag for each film. Red’s theme is fraternity which evolves into an anti-romance dealing with a woman in Geneva who accidentally hits a dog belonging to a retired judge. He offers her the dog claiming his primary interest in life is to be a detached observer of humanity rather than its judge.
March 1 – In the Heat of the Night Norman Jewison brings together the elegant character of Virgil Tibbs with the local police chief who represents the systemic racism of the American south. We watch how this strained relationship flowers into one of mutual respect which leaves us with some hope change can happen.
March 29 - Ridicule* The setting of this film is the court of Louis XVI circa 1783 in which language is used to manipulate, punish and to seduce. This reality of the court is revealed in the attempt by a young baron to get money from the king to drain a swamp, but ultimately finds he is falling into a vast linguistic sink hole.
